Fall
As fall settles in and the hours of sunlight dwindle, you may find it’s hard to keep a positive perspective on life, keeping motivated, or doing anything that doesn’t involve work, food or a couch. Maybe I speak too soon, and it is the heart of winter we feel this most, but I address it now, before the holiday season takes over and you find yourself whirl-winded into the New Year and winter slumped in February.
How do we maintain energy when hibernation kicks in? Why do we feel depressed and fatigued as the sunshine leaves us only to be replaced by an endless litany of cold and rain and damp? The answer may be very simple actually. Some of us will experience various degrees of seasonal depression or the basic human fact that our metabolic rate depresses over winter making us more sluggish, fatigued and unwilling to maintain regular activity throughout the day. How can we counteract this sluggishness and get off the couch while still taking it easy and being kind to ourselves? A couple things come to mind: walking, tai chi, yoga, taking the stairs instead of the elevator (you’ve heard it all before). I repeat it only to reiterate how integral to a healthy life even the simplest of daily activities can be—movement is essential. Anything to help us connect to our body and get moving is helpful and will make a difference. And for those especially sensitive to the dwindling light (SAD), full spectrum lighting can make a huge difference.
Walking

Walking is making a comeback. Many more of the current generation are planning their lives around easy mobility without cars. Undervalued for far too long, walking is in many ways the ideal exercise. Get out and walk for the sheer joy of it!
