Breathing as a tool for healing

May is a natural time of year to focus on your breathing. You might have noticed that as spring comes you find yourself breathing deeply due to the scents of budding flowers. Or, alternately, perhaps you are hiding inside as allergy season swings into high gear. Because of the season change, May is a time you will naturally notice your breathing shift, for better or worse. At Coast Chiropractic we want to draw your attention to the power of conscious breathing. You may already have a meditation practice or strategies to stop hiccups or reduce stress. We want to take your breath awareness to the next level, to a place where you actively use breath as a healing tool for your body and mind. In order to do this, we practice Somato Respiratory Integration, which Dr. Carson might have explained to you.

What is Somato Respiratory Integration?

Somato (Body) Respiratory (Breathing) Integration (SRI) is designed to offer you new options in your experience of your body and your personal healing. It is designed to educate you to your body’s rhythms and inner wisdom through focused attention, gentle breath, movement and touch. SRI provides you with a gentle means of placing your attention on your body, the vessel of human spirit, and provides a tool for focusing your attention in a way that works for your healing and empowerment. SRI is particularly helpful for anxiety.

Somato Respiratory Integration exercises (based on Donald Epstein’s book The Twelve Stages of Healing: A Network Approach to Wholeness) are designed to help the brain to reconnect with the body and its experience. The goal of Somato Respiratory Integration is to help an individual develop lifetime skills, safety, strength, wisdom and love in relationship to the experience of his/her body, its vibration, structure, and energy. Through reconnecting a person’s breath, touch, focused movement and attention, he/she is able to experience the body more fully and instantly shift his/her state of consciousness to one that supports trust for the body-mind and life experience.

Allow spring to bring new beginnings to both the outside world and to your inner life. Ask Dr. Carson for a handout sheet on SRI and look for an upcoming SRI workshop this year.

Your body’s ability to heal is greater than anyone has permitted you to believe.
